Anglo Aquatic Plant's Policy on Invasive speciesPonds, rivers and lakes are essential for wildlife. Anglo Aquatic Plant are committed to helping people create beautiful water features to improve and protect our environment. The most important point; under no circumstances should garden plants be disposed of in the wild. Even native plants placed in the wrong location cause environmental damage. It is essential to dispose of them correctly, either compost them or take them to your local refuse centre. UK legislationFive aquatic plants were identified as having the potential to damage the ecosystem in the UK. In April 2014 these plants were banned from sale in the UK. Please note we had not sold these plants for many years prior to the ban and Anglo Aquatic Plant was personally thanked by Richard Benyon, the then Minister for Natural Environment & Fisheries, for our support of the Be Plant Wise campaign and it’s key messages. European legislationOn the 1st January 2016 a European law came into force that makes it illegal to sell any plants on the List of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern. Although the regulation was agreed and voted for by MEPs, the list was composed by representatives from each country. MEPs had such concern over the list that an objection to the list was raised and upheld by the MEPs. They said; “Many of the most problematic invasive alien species are missing from the draft, while at the same time, some species incapable of causing significant negative impacts are listed.” However the European commission could and did ignore the MEPs and it implemented the list regardless. The first list was implemented on the 3rd August 2016 with a one year grace period to sell out of stock.
